Vertical file cabinets were the brainchild of Edwin G. Seibels who invented this type of office filing cabinet back in 1898. The new invention actually created a revolution in the way files were stored and retrieved. People were fascinated by the ease of using these drawers and the simplicity of retrieving files easily and quickly. This eradicates the old fashioned way of storing a paper documents in pigeonholes lining a wall. Retrieval of documents this way is very time consuming and inconvenient. Thus, when the vertical file cabinet was introduced, it took the world by storm.
Now people don’t have to use envelopes to store paper documents. Previously with envelopes, retrieval is very time consuming as one had to open each envelope to access the documents.
Vertical file cabinets are quite popular among homeowners and professionals in the office environment because of its ease of use and the uniqueness of storing paper documents this way. The biggest reason people choose vertical file cabinet over lateral file cabinets is the small space it takes to store these units than other types of office filing cabinets. Vertical file cabinet takes less surface space as it is much narrower than lateral file cabinets.
Vertical file cabinets come in two distinct sizes; the letter or legal paper size. These come in a two, three, four or even five drawer version that are tall and can be used to store a huge number of documents. The drawer’s depth ranges of 25, 261/2 and 28 inches. The four drawer vertical file is the most popular model used by most modern office. The two drawer file is often used along a desk as a supplement storage unit. The fiver drawer version is often used at government offices across the nation as a storage space to keep all of the legal and important documents. Often, these filing cabinets are also fireproof which is helpful to prevent disasters when a fire strikes. The five drawer verticals provide the least expensive way to store documents as it takes up less surface space which means that more documents can be stored when two or more of these cabinets are placed alongside each other in an office.
The three drawer ranks as one of the most popular ways to double up as a desktop to work while those drawers provide the necessary storage space. It is perfectly aligned with most counter top height desks so this certainly adds to the advantage of getting one of these cabinets, especially if you don’t want to have a separate desk.
Most of these vertical file cabinets are made in a way that can easily accommodate hanging file folders as these seems to be the most popular way to store documents in most offices. In some model, there is a follow block in each drawer. This is a special technique that is used to adjust the position of the files so it stays upright at all times for easy retrieval. The 18 inch depth version is ideal for lighter use in the home or even in the office where there are less files to store. With these designs, the drawers are often not fully extended unlike the five drawer versions.
